How can I find an after-dinner speaker?
Q: When I organise the annual sales meeting at the publishing company where I am PA to the MD, I normally hire part of an hotel for the actual meeting and reserve part of a restaurant for the meal, speeches and presentations. This summer is our company’s tenth anniversary, so the MD has asked me to get a proper after-dinner speaker but has given me no guidelines as to who he wants.
These events are usually quite rowdy so I don’t want someone too serious, but neither do I want a stand-up comedian who detracts from the fact that it is a company meeting. How do I go about booking a speaker and what does it cost?
A: After-dinner speakers used to be relatively rare, but now everyone from soap stars and former sportsmen to comedians and former politicians can be hired to talk at conferences and corporate events. Clearly, who you decide to hire depends on your budget, what you hope to achieve and, to a certain extent, the age and make-up of your audience.
Your budget for this should narrow the choice. You need to decide whether you want a speaker who is a celebrity, someone from the professional/business world, someone motivational or someone who will purely provide a bit of comedy. Names in each category will range from the almost unknown to the very famous, and their fees range accordingly.
