* Atherton Pits. For a great insight into the history of the Atherton and Lancashire coalfields, visit Atherton lad Alan Davies's superb mining history resource at www.coalpits.co.uk. You can even trace family members who were involved in mining accidents. Alan is an authority on the history of mining in Atherton.
