More about Garry...
Garry has been actively involved in space exploration for more than three decades.
His space career started as a very junior scientist who developed some computer procedures which became the basis for the early earth meteorological experiments to measure the properties of clouds from space and provide corrections to other measurements used for forecasting the weather.
You can judge for yourself whether this was really successful!
From the cloistered and collegiate environment of Oxford, Garry was invited to join the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, California to work on a range of projects associated with the exploration of the solar system.
These were very early days, when the first primitive spacecraft had managed to attempt to land on Venus with varying success, and fly by Mars, which then still looked like the moon.
At JPL Garry shared an office with a member of the NASA Astronaut programme, which provided many insights to NASA then current programme and plans for the future with space shuttle, which was strongly opposed by many leading people in the space programme.
Garry worked initially as a junior scientist to develop new ways to determine an understanding of the atmospheres of the other planets in the solar system as NASA goal had moved from simply landing on the moon, to seeking to understand the origin of life, and exploring other planets for the future of mankind. While at JPL, one of a group of 7 people worldwide (the only Brit), selected by NASA to develop a TV system for exploring the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune), with responsibility for the weather systems. This involved the development of the data analysis systems and a close working relationship with the engineering and spacecraft teams over 20 years; learning many new skills on the way.
During this time Garry returned to the UK and set up a group at University College London, and later Imperial College, London to continue this work, which required the development of a new data process system and the development of the team of people to make it happen. This work expanded to support TV weather broadcasts as you still see today.
Garry's extensive work and varied activities with NASA resulted in 4 awards by the space agency. It has also led many activities with ESA as well as the award of Scientist of the Decade by ITN news in 1989. The skills developed in these activities have been more extensive than any MBA programme, requiring vision, people management and development, project management and communications skills to develop oneself and the teams through the many peaks and troughs. An excellent basis for success in business. After Dinner Speakers Celebrities Sporting Speakers Motivational Speakers Home Search Contact Details
