LAURIE TAYLOR
Laurie Taylor is visiting
Professor in the Department of Politics and Sociology at Birkbeck College,
University of London.
He holds honorary degrees from the University of Nottingham and the University
of Central England. He was made a Fellow of Birkbeck College in l996.
His career before university included eight years industrial and sales
experience with a major textile company. He also spent five years teaching in a
London comprehensive school, four years as a librarian with Liverpool City
Council and a year working as a professional actor with Joan Littlewood's
Theatre Workshop.
For the last fifteen years he has been heard on BBC Radio 4 in such programmes
as Stop The Week, The Radio Programme, News Quiz, and Speaking as an Expert.
He can be heard on R4 presenting 'Thinking Allowed', a programme devoted to
society and social change, and every Sunday evening presenting 'Room for
Improvement', a programme concerned with the hundreds of ways in which we can
improve our knowledge, skills and self-confidence.
Laurie Taylor is the author of fourteen books on motivation, change,
communication and personal identity.
He wrote a weekly diary for the New Statesman and writes a weekly humorous
column for The Times Higher Education Supplement.
He is a regular contributor to The Guardian with a column on society and social
change.
