NIGEL REES

Nigel Rees has a personal blend of wit and word-play which has attracted plaudits at over 700 speaking engagements.

A writer and broadcaster, he is probably best-known as deviser/ presenter of Radio 4's long-running QUOTE...UNQUOTE programme and for his many guest appearances on Channel Four’s Countdown. He is the author of more than thirty books, including three novels, and his special interest lies in the popular use of the English language and the humour that derives from it.

Among his most recent offerings are the Guinness Book of Humorous Anecdotes and the Guinness Dictionary of Jokes. Total sales of his books, including the best-selling Graffiti series, exceed five million.

Born near Liverpool, he went into television as a production trainee with Granada in Manchester. He made his first TV appearances on local programmes in 1967 before moving to London as a freelance. Initially, he worked for ITN's NEWS AT TEN as a reporter but soon became involved in a wide range of radio programmes as contributor and producer.

In 1971, he switched to presenting. He introduced the BBC World Service current affairs magazine TWENTY-FOUR HOURS and was also a regular presenter of Radio 4's Arts magazine KALEIDOSCOPE. By way of contrast he kept up the revue acting he had started at Oxford by appearing for five years in Radio 4's satirical show WEEK ENDING... and then in THE BURKISS WAY.

He was the youngest-ever presenter of Radio 4's breakfast-time TODAY programme, and in 1976 began his QUOTE... UNQUOTE, quiz-anthology on Radio 4 which is still popular today. As TV quiz-master, series have included CHALLENGE OF THE SOUTH for TVS, FIRST THINGS FIRST for HTV Wales, and AMOEBAS TO ZEBRAS, a natural history quiz from TSW on the ITV network. He also appears regularly presiding over 'dictionary corner' on Channel 4's COUNTDOWN.
