PETER BENTON
Peter Benton is the author of RIDING THE WHIRLWIND, which was based on over 30 years of practical experience of business around the world. He presents an innovative investigation of leadership in industry, commerce and the public services.
He argues that the age of technology must rediscover humane values and shows how the individual can prosper in today's business world which is facing a new era of turbulence.
Peter was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge and graduated with an MA in Natural Sciences. In l958 he started his career working at UNILEVER in production and sales management. Two years later Peter obtained scientific and technical sales positions with SHELL CHEMICALS and joined the paint manufacturers BERGER JENSON NICHOLSON in l963.
From l964 to l971 Peter worked for the management consultants MCKINSEY CO in London and Chicago on marketing, technology and strategic projects for major customers. His clients included the MIDLAND BANK, advising the BRITISH GAS COUNCIL on the introduction of NORTH SEA GAS and studies for several US energy companies. In l971 Peter became a member of the Group Board of GALLAHER Limited and Chairman of its major engineering subsidiaries.
In l978 Peter changed his line of business becoming Managing Director of POST OFFICE TELECOMMUNICATIONS. In this function he was responsible for 240,000 employees and an investment programme of more than £lbillion a year. In l981 he became Deputy Chairman at BRITISH TELECOM and two years later Special Advisor on Information Technology to the EEC.
In December l991 he ended his five year position as Director General of the BRITISH INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT. He is Chairman of the ENFIELD HEALTH AUTHORITY, a Director of ENTERPRISE SUPPORT and THE TURING INSTITUTE which is at the leading edge of research into robotics and artificial intelligence.
He is Vice President of CECIOS, THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL OF MANAGEMENT.
He is a member of the DTI's INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY BOARD and the BRITISH LIBRARY ADVISORY COUNCIL.
